Job Title: Senior Programme Associate (VAM – GIS),

Contract Type/Grade: G7

Duty Station: Mogadishu, Somalia

Contract Duration: 1 year (Initial)

Date of Issue: January 25, 2024| Closing Date: February 7, 2024.

What will you do?

  • Provide technical support in geospatial mapping and remote sensing for evidence-based food security monitoring aligned with WFP standards.
  • Contribute to VAM initiatives, ensuring compliance with WFP policies.
  • Support the development of innovative systems and tools for monitoring food assistance needs.
  • Guide coordination of data gathering, ensuring rigorous quality standards.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to monitor ongoing projects, ensuring efficiency and highlighting potential risks.
  • Assist in designing and maintaining digital platforms for data analysis and geospatial visualization.
  • Support capacity building for WFP staff, partners, and national government in vulnerability analysis and geospatial systems.
  • Participate in coordination forums to represent WFP views and foster collaboration.
  • Act as a referral point and support staff with expertise in analysis.
  • Respond to emergency food assistance needs and perform other required duties.

Experiences and Qualifications

Education: University degree, preferably in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computer science or other relevant fields, OR First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses is required.

Language: Fluency in English, working knowledge (level B) of a second UN language will be considered as an asset (preferably French, Spanish or Arabic). Somali language is an asset.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

  • Profound experience working with GIS software ArcGIS, Quantum-GIS and other Open-Source software knowledge is an asset.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in Geographic Information Systems. Minimum two years professional postgraduate experience in the field of geospatial analysis, information management, environmental analysis, statistical analysis.
  • Experience in collaborative work with governments, other UN agencies and key stakeholders in food and nutrition security.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • knowledge of main GIS software: ArcGIS, QGIS, another Open-Source software knowledge is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of spatial analysis techniques.
  • Advanced GIS and geodatabase management skills.
  • Familiarity with spatial databases and establishment of cloud-based SDI.
  • Experience in emergency contexts and flexibility to travel at short notice is desirable.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and understanding of WFP vulnerability mapping systems and emergency assessment standards is an asset.
  • Strong ability with Office365.
  • Competencies in the use of statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, R, Tableau, Power BI etc will be an asset.
