Interested applicants who are working with UNSOS/UNSOM Contractors must fulfil the obligations of their contracts with UN Contractors in order to be eligible to apply for this vacancy. Under the overall supervision of the Chief Engineering and Facility Management Section (EFMS) or his/her delegated representatives and under the direct supervision of the Head of Design Unit in Mogadishu, the international individual contractor (IIC) will be performing their overall duties and responsibilities. The person will be based in Mogadishu in Somalia. Under the overall supervision of the Chief Engineering and Facility Management Section or his/her delegated representatives and under the direct supervision of the Head of Design Unit, He/She will be responsible and accountable for preliminary and detailed review of structural design computations and detailed construction details and drawings for compliance with local and international engineering standards and practices while meeting the clients’ requirements. The structural designs and drawings are submitted by UNSOS contracted vendors for construction activities around the Aden Abdulle International Airport (AAIA), other Sector Hubs and bases around the mission as well as other UNSOS clients in Somalia. All the structural design reviews to be carried out against relevant British or European standards of practice. The international individual contractor (IIC) is expected to deliver on the following objectives: Liaise with the mission architect for the concept designs and “End State” Master Plan of UNSOM/UNSOS facilities at the Aden Abdulle International Airport (AAIA) and in all mission Sector Hubs and ensure that UNSOS contracted vendors design submissions fit-in with the mission approved concept designs and master plans. Conduct field assessment of proposed project sites and confirm that existing buildings, surface and underground facilities, services and utilities are taken into account in the vendors design assumptions and submissions. Review the vendor submitted structural design computations and construction details for facilities including living and office accommodations; Medical, support and recreation facilities; Safety and security installations; Water and wastewater systems; Power supply systems; earth retaining structures, and any other structures required by UNSOM/UNSOS in Somalia for robustness, best value for money and compliance with relevant local and international engineering standards of practice. Review the structural integrity of existing structures and advise on risks and their mitigation based on planned facilities and considering continuous occupation of the existing facilities during modification and repair periods. Ensure that UN environmental guidelines and international standards are included into all designs, all plans and drawings are produced in AutoCAD and all relevant Space Planning Guidelines (UN entitlements, Occupational Health Regulations), Fire Safety Guidelines, International Building Code, and other guiding principles are followed and incorporated in the designs.
