Job Description

Terms of Reference (TOR) for Berbera Youth Center Volunteers Board

  1. Background

The Berbera Youth Center, managed by Shaqodoon in partnership with the Berbera Municipality and UNFPA, is dedicated to providing a safe and empowering space for youth and women in Gabiley and its surrounding areas. The center offers critical services such as sexual and reproductive health counseling, educational and vocational training, community outreach programs, and support for individuals facing gender-based violence.

To foster deeper community engagement and maximize the impact of the center's initiatives, a Youth Center Volunteers Board will be established. This board will comprise 7 enthusiastic and dedicated members who will actively participate in the formulation, planning, and supervision of the center's programs. The board's mission is to bridge the gap between the center and the local community, particularly the youth, to ensure that the center's activities are responsive and beneficial to its stakeholders.

  1. Objectives

The primary objectives of the Youth Center Volunteers Board are:

  • Act as advocates and representatives of youth interests within the community.
  • Collaborate closely with the center's management to design and implement innovative programs and initiatives.
  • Mobilize community support and resources to enhance the impact and reach of the center's activities.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to ensure that the center remains relevant and effective in addressing community needs.
  • Promote inclusivity, creativity, and collaboration within the center's programs and activities.
  • Participate in the development of quarterly workplans and contribute to the strategic direction of the center.
  1. Responsibilities
  • The responsibilities of the Youth Center Volunteers Board members include:
  • Attend quarterly board meetings to discuss and plan center activities, programs, and initiatives.
  • Actively contribute to the development and implementation of the center's projects and campaigns.
  • Bring your ideas, experiences, and diverse thoughts to the table to build a holistic perspective that powers the youth center operations.
  • Engage and mobilize youth from the local community to participate in the center's activities and outreach efforts.
  • Collaborate with the center's staff to design and execute awareness and advocacy campaigns on relevant issues.
  • Serve as liaisons between the center and various stakeholders, including community leaders, schools, and youth organizations.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating the impact of center activities and propose improvements as needed.
  • Represent the interests and concerns of youth within the community to the center's management and stakeholders.

Experiences and Qualifications

Applicants for the Youth Volunteers Board must meet the following criteria:

  • Does not engage in political activities and maintains a neutral mindset regarding political issues.
  • Be an advocate and champion for youth empowerment.
  • Willing to sharpen your leadership through volunteerism.
  • Reside in Berbera or surrounding areas.
  • Aged between 18 to 30 years old.
  • Have graduated from a bachelor's degree, or currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program and above.
  • Proficient in both Somali and English languages (spoken and written).
  • Demonstrated commitment to community service and youth empowerment.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Interest in issues related to youth development, gender equality, and community engagement.
  • Strong social media presence and event management skills.

Willingness to commit to a one-year term and attend regular board meetings

  1. Selection Process

The selection of Youth Volunteers Board members will follow these steps:

  • Final selection of board members based on qualifications, experience, and alignment with the objectives of the Berbera Youth Center.
  1. Duration of Membership

Each member of the Youth Center Volunteers Board will serve for a term of one year. At the end of the term, a new board will be selected through a similar application and selection process.

  1. Remuneration

The position of Youth Center Volunteers Board member is voluntary and unpaid. However, board members will receive certificates of participation and recognition for their service to the community.
