VACANT POSITION: Gender Empowerment Officer (1position)

Closing date: February 21th, 2024

Reporting to: Resilience Project Manager

Duration: 1 year with the possibility of extension

Location:  Burao with frequent travel to Erigavo district

 

JOB DESCRIBTION

The Agricultural Development Organization - ADO - was established in 1993 and had expanded its activities to the early recovery and development. The ADO has its Head Office in Hargeisa with the regional branch offices in Burao, Borama, Odweine and Erigavo of Togdheer, Awdal, and Sanaag regions. Besides, the ADO is currently expanding its programs and presence in the Somali Ethiopia Region, South-central, and Southern Somalia. ADO is an active member of the main local umbrella groups, namely, NAGAAD, SOLPAF, NAFIS Network, and SONSEF. Internationally, ADO is a member of resilient40 a multidisciplinary network of African and diaspora young professional climate action leaders formulated in 2019, who are in partnership and driven by a common goal of promoting climate resilience in Africa.

 

ADO possess extensive programmatic proficiency across essential domains including Economic Empowerment and Growth, Environmental Sustainability and Adaptation, WASH, Gender Equality and Inclusion, and Humanitarian services. Our commitment extends beyond initial relief, persisting in aiding survivors to reconstruct their lives and forge a path towards self-reliance and developmental progress.

 

ADO has been a potential partner of the International Solidarity Foundation (ISF) for the past fourteen years. This long-term partnership had built ADO capacity in terms of livelihood, resilience, and climate-smart agriculture projects implementation. Therefore, ADO and ISF are still collaborating on a Project in Erigavo and Togdheer regions.

 

The Project strategically finds solutions to the existing problems of gender economic inequality, climate change effects of shocks, and stressors. It will support ADO's organizational strategy, programmatic/thematic areas. It will help the ADO solve locally existing problems and challenges by availing funds to implement needs-based activities in the proposed target areas to assist the poorest and most vulnerable communities.

 

Therefore, ADO, a partner of ISF Finland, is seeking a qualified Gender Empowerment Officer to strengthen women's livelihood for economic development and climate change adaptationThe duty station of the project officer will be at the ADO Burao Office with frequent travel to Erigavo and the project target locations. Mainly the officer will be responsible Effectively arrange and organize field level trainings and workshop for target beneficiaries, drafting field reports, and assist with day-to-day activities of the project areas working closely with farmers, pastoralists, cooperatives, village development committees, Self-help Groups (SHGs), Government Officials, and other stakeholders; Monitor whether women are participating the project activities all the time, and lead them to effectively participate project activities.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Planning
  • Prepare project activities concerning women participation for food security livelihood project
  • Set the indicators for project plan and collect baseline data for them
  • Plan project activities and submit to the project manager for review before deadline
  • Effectively arrange and organize field level trainings and workshop for target beneficiaries.
  • Co-plan and design with project manager effective project activities through beneficiary community needs that will motivate and support women’s’ participation in food security.
  1. Implementation
  • Implement of project activities according to the project annual and quarter activity plan in Boodhley, Xidhxidh, Gaacidh and and Midhisho and stay at least four nights in a week in the field
  • Conduct gender empowerment related trainings and workshops in village levels
  • Collaborate with other project officers in the field to motivate women’s participation within the food security project
  • Listen carefully women’s voice, and think strategically and participatory way how to increase women’s participation within the food security project
  • Submit activity requests and financial receipts for activities conducted in the field
  • Apply interpersonal skills, and have the capacity to adopt possible community resistance through conflict mitigation and resolution mechanism
  • Submit activity and field trip reports after field trip to the project manager
  • Apply conflict resolution and mitigation approaches, if any conflict arises
  • Closely work with and activate women associations (SHGs) in Boodhley, Xidhxidh, Gaacidh and and Midhisho villages
  • Aware and mobilize target village women on their role within the food security and liveloods project
  1. Monitoring

 

  • Collect data from the field, and submit monitoring reports to Project manager
  • Monitor the progress after activities are conducted, and take corrective actions on time to achieve project expected results
  • Monitor whether women are participating the project activities all the time, and lead them to effectively participate project activities
  1. Evaluation
  • Take part for external evaluation with the tasks that Program/project manager assign
  1. Networking
  • Establish effective networking and communication ties with women associations.
  • Initiate active and proper networking channels with local authority, CBOs, INGOs, LNGOs and attend similar work meetings.
  • Attend and gender empowerment and capacity building trainings and workshops and forum meetings

Experiences and Qualifications

-        Have a minimum degree in Social Science, Gender, Business and Economic Development, Development Studies, and related fields.

-        Minimum 4 years’ experience of working on Gender empowerment, protection and gender related projects.

-        Familiarity in the rural cultural, social, and traditional contexts of the Somaliland communities;

-        Experience in adult training skills or Approved Trainer of Trainers for adult learners;

-        Proficiency in basic computer software, word and excel command, and understanding the humanitarian and social enterprise approach.

-        Commitment, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;

-        Strong aptitude and attitude for organizational change, innovation, learning, team building.

-        Willingness to travel to designated program locations.
