General information:

  • Organization: Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH).
  • Position: WASH Assistant.
  • Location: 1 in Hirshabelle & 1 in Galmudug state. Specify when applying either Galmudug or Hirshabelle.
  • Starting date: ASAP.
  • Reports to: Project Coordinator.
  • Contract duration: 10 Months

Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH) is a non-governmental organization which mission it is to make the world a better place. For over 20 years, we have been providing relief in big and small emergencies worldwide alongside with running long-term missions in several countries in crisis.

Our interventions – of both humanitarian and development character– have been carried out in 44 countries so far. Our focus is on ensuring sustainable and stable development of regions suffering the consequences of war and/or natural disasters. PAH Mission in Somalia:

PAH has been present in Somalia since 2011. With WASH, FSL and Nutrition programs PAH supported people from the most vulnerable communities in different regions in Somalia. Our primary focus is to provide safe drinking water through rehabilitation of water infrastructure, constructing water distribution systems, and constructing rain water reservoirs. In our work we also focus on other WASH components such as improvement of sanitary conditions, hygiene promotion to make our WASH interventions fully comprehensive. Our current donors are ECHO, GFFO, SHF and UNICEF. PAH programs targets the most vulnerable IDPs, host and rural communities as well as institutions in Banadir, Lower Shebelle, Middle Shebelle and Galmudug Region.

PAH in Somalia is looking for a WASH Assistantwho will become part of our operation team. The person will holdthe following responsibilities:

  1. Participate the organization and facilitates of community awareness sessions.

Monitor and report on the WASH project activities and ensure compliance with plans and PAH standards.

  1. Participates in the selection process of project beneficiaries including CHPs, OM personals, Casual workerswith support of the line manager.
  2. Promote safe WASH practices, including appropriate use and maintenance of WASH facilities and service.
  3. Facilitate appropriate community involvement in the design and delivery of essential WASH services andfacilities.
  4. Conduct hygiene promotion activities in the IDP camps under the guidance of the line manager.
  5. Conduct regular supervision of project activities and shares feedback to the line managers.
  6. Ensure beneficiary accountability is carried out and report any feedback to the line manager.
  7. Supervise hygiene promotion activities in the assigned areas.
  8. Participate and conduct need assessment in the assigned duty locations.
  9. Performs any other duty assigned by your immediate supervisor or line manager

Experiences and Qualifications

The candidate should have:

  • Professional experience of 2 years minimum in a humanitarian emergency context and a minimum of 1 years’ experience in implementing emergency WASH project.
  • High school certificate, or equivalent diploma, bachelor’s degree of public health/nursing/social science is an added advantage.
  • Fluent Somali and at least good knowledge of English
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, and Power point)

Context related skills and experience

  • Knowledge of the operating context in south and central Somalia
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Good understanding of complex emergencies and crisis contexts
  • Attention to detail, flexible and creative.
  • Goal oriented with ability to work under pressure, independently and with limited supervision.
  • Very good organizational and administrative skills
  • Strong teamwork and support role skills
