Duration: 12 months, fixed term, renewable based on performance, funds, and need for the position

Role Overview: 

The Social / Gender Based Violence (GBV) Specialist is directly responsible for supporting the technical aspects of the GBV activities for by ensuring it is implemented with quality. S/he will oversee the planning and implementation of GBV activities, build capacity, manage the GBV staff, provide technical support to other components under the program, and ensure GBV prevention and response aspects are integrated throughout the program and internal and external coordination. In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

 

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • ·       Providing Technical support Program.
  • ·       Take steps to mitigate risks in delivering GBV and FGM/C services.
  • ·       Train health service providers in GBV and FGM/C service provision
  • ·       Conduct ongoing supervision of GBV and FGM/C services.
  • ·       Develop materials to ensure delivery of safe and effective GBV and FGM/C services.
  • ·       Work with facilities to organize and execute GBV and FBM/C community consultation, stakeholder trainings, and awareness campaigns.
  • ·       Closely collaborate with Government to support a multi-sectoral response to GBV and FGM/C
  • ·       Oversee the implementation of environmental and social standard documents, ESMF, LMP, SEP, PSEAH Prevention and Response Action Plan, prepared for the project.
  • ·       Be the grievance management focal point person and coordinate receipt, resolution, closure and reporting on grievances.
  • ·       Oversee the program's GBV activities and provide advice, support, and assistance in the development of training materials, IEC/BCC materials and methodologies, etc., as necessary to achieve project goals.
  • ·       Provide thematic expertise on GBV/ FGM in relation to human rights, reproductive health, and gender, ensuring that the project at the regional level is in line with the global guidelines.
  • ·       Engagement/meetings/orientation to district officials, head of hospitals and other relevant actors on, national policies on CMR, referral pathway coordination, etc.
  • ·       Arrange/ Conduct training on GBV clinical management, including the syndromic management of Sexually Transmitted Illnesses (STIs) and use of devices/ MISP kits and treatment including for child survivors.
  • ·       Contribute to ongoing assessments and analyses to better understand protection risks, to map points of service for survivors of GBV and vulnerable individuals, and to identify support structures.
  • ·       Analyze trends of GBV and develop/adjust program strategies to meet needs.
  • ·       Liaise with MoH and management of health facilities, as required, to ensure commitment to the provision of health services to survivors of gender-based violence, including sexual assault and rape.
  • ·       Responsible for synthesizing and documenting FGM/C activities and results, including documenting case studies, success stories, and lessons learned of the program.
  • ·       Consider security implications of all GBV interventions, in consultation with relevant partners.
  • ·       Actively promote PSEAH (prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse & harassment) standards among beneficiaries served by Alight.
  • ·       Coordinate with all relevant actors and actively participate in protection/ GBV sub-cluster/working groups, coordinated assessments, mapping services, information sharing, etc.
  • ·       Coordinate with other GBV actors in the targeted area, including local organizations and security representatives.
  • ·       Identify and support local organizations committed to women's rights and empowerment.
  • ·       Work with partners and community members to develop a referral mechanism for available services.
  • ·       Coordinate with other sectors as possible to ensure integration of GBV concerns into various interventions, in line with the IASC GBV Guidelines.

 

Experiences and Qualifications

Qualifications and Skills: 

·       A master’s degree in Sociology, Anthropology or Community Development, Population Studies or Gender.

·       At least eight years of general professional experience and at least 2 years clinical experience providing care for survivors of sexual assault.

·       At least five years of specific experience in supervising GBV and FGM/C prevention and response activities; GBV and FGM/C awareness in a healthcare setting is required

·       At least three years of demonstrable experience in GBV legal frameworks, principles of medical care of GBV and FGM/C, data collection and analysis on GBV and FGM/C.

·       Excellent knowledge of the guiding and ethical principles that govern work with survivors of GBV and FGM/C and good practices in the implementation of activities to prevent and address GBV and FGM/C.

·       Excellent oral and written communication skills.

·       Ability to multitask, work under pressure, exercise flexibility, and adaptability to transition.

·       Commitment to Alight’s Child Protection Policy.
