Job Description

The Role Summary:

The Project Officer will play a crucial role in supporting an Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM) program aimed at providing timely treatment for key illnesses in children under five. The role holder will work closely with ICCM Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ensure the effective treatment of diseases such as Pneumonia, Diarrhea, Malaria, Newborn care, and Malnutrition. This will include sensitizing communities, supporting CHWs in identifying and addressing health problems, identifying treatment interventions and referrals for children under five, providing pre-referral treatment, and delivering treatment at home.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure effective implementation and coordination of the project.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on project activities.
  • Manage finances, assets, and budgets related to the project.
  • Represent the organization in various forums.
  • Identify and report any problems that may hinder the achievement of program objectives to the Project Manager- Health and Nutrition.
  • Assess, classify, and handle sick children aged two months to five years for danger signs, symptoms, and conditions related to diarrhea, pneumonia, and severe acute malnutrition. Refer cases as needed.
  • Coordinate with community leaders, district authorities, and other stakeholders to mobilize communities for active participation in project activities.
  • Conduct regular monthly meetings with the team, volunteers, and community committee members to discuss related issues, achievements, and lessons learned.
  • Develop monthly plans and discuss the required activities with here/his team.
  • Conduct regular supervision visits to evaluate field activities, provide feedback to community health volunteers, and address training gaps.
  • Organize and coordinate workshops in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders. Prepare and submit training reports on time.
  • Develop and implement community mobilization strategies to increase awareness and understanding of ICCM services and promote community engagement and participation.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including government health authorities, NGOs, and community-based organizations, to ensure a coordinated and integrated approach to ICCM implementation.
  • Support the training and capacity building of ICCM Community Health Workers, including the development and delivery of training materials and the provision of ongoing mentoring and support.
  • Ensure the availability and appropriate use of essential medicines, medical supplies, and equipment for ICCM services in collaboration with the logistics and procurement teams.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of ICCM services, including conducting regular assessments, data collection, and analysis to identify gaps, challenges, and areas for improvement.
  • Facilitate the establishment and strengthening of referral systems between community-level ICCM services and higher-level health facilities, ensuring smooth and timely referrals for complicated cases.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of behavior change communication strategies and materials to promote healthy practices and prevent illnesses in the community.
  • Participate in relevant coordination meetings, workshops, and conferences to share experiences, best practices, and lessons learned related to ICCM.
  • Document and disseminate success stories, case studies, and best practices from the ICCM program to contribute to organizational learning and knowledge sharing

Experiences and Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) in Public Health, Nutrition, or Nursing with a minimum of three years of experience in a similar context knowledge of ICCM is bonus.
  • Three years of experience in implementing Health and Nutrition projects in a humanitarian setting.
  • Experience in coordinating and conducting monitoring and supervision of Health and Nutrition projects.
  • Experience in emergency response and disease outbreak management.
  • Experience and ability to manage projects in insecure environments.
  • Fluent in English and Somali.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office programs.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian standards, such as SPHERE.
