Project Assistant – FSL

 

The Role:

The project assistant- FSL is responsible for supporting the effective planning, implementation, and monitoring of food security and livelihoods interventions under Re-Greening Africa project funded EU and other complementing projects in Odweyne district. The role ensures the timely delivery of project activities, in accordance with set targets and timelines, while maintaining quality and accountability. The project assistant will work closely with communities and stakeholders to enhance food access, promote sustainable livelihoods, and build resilience. Furthermore, the role involves regular reporting, tracking progress against indicators, and ensuring that the project achieves its desired outcomes and impact.

Key Responsibilities:

Programme Implementation         

  • Engage community leaders, government bodies to identify sites for NRM activity implementation
  • Together with Project Officer, implement all NRM activities and monitor the progress in a day to day basis.
  • Provide support on matters related to rangeland and livestock feeding improvement e.g. pasture development/improvement/ regeneration/production and preservation, following up with the com unities to ensure that grazing plans are followed.
  • Identify sustainable NRM activities including range land rehabilitation, degraded land reclamation and reforestation and gully treatment. 

Effective Monitoring and Evaluation           

  • Monitoring and supervision of community FMNR sites, soil and conservation construction sites
  • Monitoring of activities progress on a regular basis and reporting to the Project Officer.
  • Participation in field level assessment and or evaluation of Programme
  • Work closely with other project assistants and DRR committees to gather EWS information.
  • Carry out community scoping exercise at target sites: appraise the major land degradation challenges experienced on site, identify restoration practices matched to restoration challenges. prioritize regreening practices for the Regreening project support.

 Capacity building Training of farmers and or target beneficiaries        

  • Plan, organize and train FMNR champions 
  • Provision of training, technical and advisory services advice not only on better NRM practices, but also on relevant subjects like rangeland management, land reclamation, climate smart agriculture 
  • Transfer of standard technologies to pastoralists on FMNR.
  • Work with Agriculture and Livelihood Assistant to promote FMNR and other innovations.

Coordination and Visibility            

  • Act as liaison between community (pastoralists, agro pastoralists) and WVS office on FMNR
  • Prepare monthly activity schedule reports.
  • In Liaison with the project officer, participated in field level coordination meeting with local government authorities and other agencies.
  • Accompany donor, government officials and other WV officials during field visits to the project sites. 

Experiences and Qualifications

  • Educational level required: Degree in Agriculture/Veterinary, Community Development, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Technical Training qualifications required: Certificate of FMNR, Regreening Communities Principles and Interventions.
  • Experience:  3 years prior experience in community work, training and coaching farmers, proven problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as negotiation skills

Working Environment:

The position is office-based in Odweyne, Somaliland with regular travel to other field locations.
