Opportunity

We are seeking a Painting and Gypsum Board Decoration Instructor who will provide instruction in painting techniques, surface preparation, wallpapering, and gypsum board installation and decoration. The role requires strong technical knowledge, including drawing and current technologies in the field. The instructor will deliver both theoretical and practical training to equip students with essential skills for the construction and decoration industry. Responsibilities include accurately measuring, cutting, and securing gypsum board panels, applying sealing compounds, and sanding surfaces to ensure a smooth finish, all while ensuring they gain the necessary skills to excel in the construction and decoration industry.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide detailed instruction in the history and principles of painting, surface preparation, and gypsum board decoration. Teach students how to apply these techniques to real-world scenarios.
  • Educate students on how to draw, read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, and technical sketches related to painting and gypsum board installation.
  • Introduce students to the latest tools, equipment, and software used in painting and gypsum board decoration, including laser levelling devices, CAD software for technical drawings, and advanced sanding tools.
  • Guide students in developing hands-on skills, such as measuring, cutting, and installing gypsum boards, as well as applying sealing compounds, sanding surfaces, and painting.
  • Develop and update curriculum materials, lesson plans, and instructional resources that reflect current industry standards and technological advancements.
  • Create assessments that accurately measure students' understanding and proficiency in both the theoretical and practical aspects of painting and gypsum board decoration.
  • Design and oversee project-based learning experiences where students can apply their skills to real-world projects.
  • Ensure that the workshop is well-equipped with the necessary tools and materials, and that all equipment is maintained in good working order.
  • Enforce safety standards in the workshop and classroom, ensuring that students are trained in the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Manage the inventory of materials such as paints, gypsum boards, and other supplies, ensuring that they are stored and used efficiently.
  • Stay updated on the latest developments in painting techniques, gypsum board technology, and industry trends. Attend professional development workshops and courses as necessary.
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry professionals and organisations to keep the program aligned with industry needs and to provide students with networking opportunities.
  • Provide academic advice to students, helping them to set and achieve their career goals in the construction and decoration fields.
  • Act as a mentor to students, offering guidance on both technical skills and professional development.
  • Lead or participate in extracurricular activities related to painting and gypsum board decoration, such as competitions, exhibitions, or community service projects.

Experiences and Qualifications

  1. Education and Experience:
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or general engineering, Interior Design, Construction Technology, or a related field with a focus on painting, carpentry and gypsum board decoration.
  • Extensive experience in painting, surface preparation, wallpapering and gypsum board installation, with a portfolio showcasing relevant projects.
  • Previous teaching experience in a TVET or similar educational setting is highly desirable.
  1. Skills and Competencies:
  • Technical Knowledge: Expertise in both traditional and contemporary painting techniques, surface preparation, and gypsum board decoration. Familiarity with technical drawing and blueprint interpretation.
  • Tool and Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in using tools and equipment related to the field, such as electric screw guns, hand drills, laser levelling devices, and CAD software.
  • Communication and Instructional Skills: Strong ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively to students with varying levels of experience.
  • Organisational Skills: Ability to manage a classroom or workshop efficiently, including maintaining equipment, managing materials, and ensuring a safe learning environment.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems that arise during both instruction and practical application
