ABOUT WELTHUNGERHILFE

 

Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest private aid organizations in Germany and has no political nor religious affiliations. It was one of the first global initiatives in the fight against hunger when it was founded in 1962 as the German chapter of the Freedom from Hunger campaign, which was led by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). From rapid disaster relief to reconstruction and long-term development cooperation projects with local partners, we provide assistance from a single source. Since its foundation, WHH has provided 2.25 billion EUR of funding for more than 6,600 projects in 70 countries.

 

Welthungerhilfe has been active in Somaliland since 2001 (Currently operates Awdal, Waqooyi-Galbeed, Togdheer and Sool Regions) and has recently expanded its operations into and South/Central Somalia in 2022 through cooperation with local implementing partners. Welthungerhilfe’s strategic focus is on building resilience and strengthening local humanitarian leadership, with 2023-2024 activities also seek to respond to the present drought crisis through humanitarian relief. Welthungerhilfe has active projects in Mudug, Galagudd, Gedo and plans to expand its intervention in Bay and Hiran regions. The core areas of Wlethungerhilfes’ work in South Central Somalia include: Humanitarian emergency assistance, Food Security, Resilience programs-agriculture, WASH and infrastructure rehabilitation and infrastructure restoration.

 

About the project

Welthungerhilfe (WHH) has secured funding from the European Union for Lot 3: Reforestation, afforestation & land restoration in areas adjacent to Burao, Somaliland. The overarching goal of the proposed project is to contribute to systemic climate-change resilience, food, fodder and water security in vulnerable communities in Burao, Somaliland. This objective hinges on two key outcomes: Targeted vulnerable Somali communities apply dryland specific reforestation, afforestation and sustainable rangeland/ agricultural land management practices in addition to applying climate smart agro-pastoral and pastoral production and water supply practices.

 

Purpose/Objective

Given the increasing challenges posed by climate change and the need for sustainable land management practices, there is a growing demand for comprehensive technical packages for rangeland and agricultural land management. The initiative, led by Welthungerhilfe (WHH), aims to assemble, research, analyze, and use multiple techniques for ecosystem management. The technical packages and simplified policies should draw upon both traditional and modern systems to complement existing practices.

 

Therefore, the consultancy aims to undertake a research to develop a comprehensive technical packages for rangeland and agricultural land management, aimed at addressing the challenges posed by climate change and promoting sustainable practices aligned to policies and NDPIII.

 

The specific objectives of the consultancy are the following:

  • Assemble, research, and analyze various techniques and policies for ecosystem management.
  • Integrate both traditional and modern systems into the technical packages to complement existing practices.
  • Offer practical solutions for adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change on rangelands and agricultural lands.
  • Develop IEC materials to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness among stakeholders regarding sustainable land management practices and policies guiding their actions.
  • Collaborate with ministries, the UN system, and universities to produce handouts or handbooks containing feasible activities for rangeland management, activity design, and community work norms. Provide cost estimates for implementing these activities, ensuring that the activities align with policies and NDPIII.
  • Create additional materials for knowledge dissemination within local communities, including radio spots and radio talk show structured in a manner that is comprehensible to the residents of Burao.
