Job Description

SOS Children’s Villages invites applications from suitably qualified and interested candidates who fulfill the eligibility criterion for the below one Position.

 

 

Position TitleEducation Officers (2 Positions)

Reporting To: Education Coordinator

Location:  Baidoa (1 Position), Hudur (1 Position)

 

Position Summary

Under the overall supervision of the Education Coordinator, the education officer is responsible for planning, implementing, follow-up and lead the implementation of the Key education activities under the ECW_FER project including leading and coordinating formal and the non-formal education programs and support activities in the school. The Education Officer is responsible for strategizing, implementing Education activities according to strategy, proposals, budgets, and plans. The education officer provides trainings and quality control of the education activities and provide professional capacity building to education staffs in a school or in the community.

 The education officer will also Lead in organizing and facilitating training programs. Oversee training, coaching and on-going support of teachers, tutors and learning facilitators in order to improve instructional practices in literacy, numeracy and social and emotional skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The following are key responsibilities of the education officer role

  • Implement Education activities according to strategy, proposals, budgets, and plans
  • Lead in organizing and facilitating Teacher training and capacity building programs
  • Oversee training, coaching and on-going support of teachers, tutors and learning facilitators in order to improve instructional practices in literacy, numeracy and social and emotional skills.
  • Work on how to promote and improve the school academics and provide child friendly learning and teaching materials
  • Support students and schools’ clubs through promotion of students’ participation and counselling
  • Providing students with support and guidance on how to deal with problems.
  • Referring students to other SOS Children’s Villages support services and mental health professionals as needed.
  • Work closely with other SOS area program team and ensuring full intra-program synergies and integrations.
  • Mediating and improving relationships between students, parents, and teachers.
  • Promote teachers’ professional capacity by providing trainings on teacher professional records and record keepings of students in the school
  • Conducting assessments to determine students' strengths, weaknesses, interests, and aptitudes
  • Working with students to develop and improve their skill set.
  • Assisting students in the development of career goals
  • Contribute to Education strategy development, project proposals and provide input on needs and gaps of the education sector
  • Provide regular progress reports to National Education Coordinator  
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement and necessary changes in the school activities
  • Ensure capacity building of teachers and promote quality education in the school and education sector in general
  • Liaise and collaborate with relevant local authorities, MOE and other key stakeholders
  • Actively promote the rights of children and their protection and advocacy oriented. 
  • Document technical issues and questions, and channel to the Education coordinator
  • Ensure a constructive co-operation with SOS Children’s Villages other programmes in the Area.
  • Ensure a constructive co-operation with other international and local NGOs as well as the UN Agencies and more so with MOE and Other Regional Education Authorities
  • Participate in relevant meetings and attend education cluster coordination meetings

Experiences and Qualifications

    •   Candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field of study including early childhood development, social science with direct linkage with the education sector.

    • ·         Candidate must have progressive education in emergency working experience
    •  
    • ·         Understanding of context and issues in Baidoa and Hudur District.
    •  
    • ·         Team-player and ability to work independently.
    •  
    • ·         Candidate must speak and understand fluently the Maay-Maay Dialect of the Somalia Language.
    •  
    • ·         Experience working in education projects or with displaced populations is desirable.
    •  
    • ·         Knowledge of educational systems, enrollment processes, and child protection principles.
  •  
  • ·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with children, families, and community members.
  •  
  • ·         Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  •  
  • ·         Organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.
  •  
  • ·         Proficiency in computer applications and technology for data management and reporting.
  •  
  • ·         Collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  •  
  • ·         Demonstrate a strong facilitation skill, knowledge and understanding on adult training approaches and methodologies and able to adapt different training models.

  • ·         Ability to ensure strong community engagement as well as school-based management team and sustain professional working relationship.
  •  
  • ·         Experience in building partnerships and working collaboratively with stakeholders.
  •  
  • ·         Proven interest in learning and capacity development, of self and others.
  •  
  • ·         Proficiency in computer (MS Word, internet, office, excel, power point)
  •  
  • ·         Understanding local contexts and dialogues is additional value.
