Program Description (Background)

​​​​​​​BACKGROUND TO THE ASSIGNMENT:

International Medical Corps (IMC), through the project “Supporting the Somali Health System to Respond to Increased Heat and Extreme Heat Events”, aims to raise public awareness about the health risks associated with extreme heat and climate-induced heatwaves. As Somalia experiences rising temperatures, the frequency and severity of heat-related illnesses are expected to increase, particularly among vulnerable populations including people with cardiovascular conditions, pregnant women, children, and the elderly.

To enhance public education and preventive health actions, IMC seeks to engage a qualified Climate Health Expert Consultant to participate in a monthly radio program that educates the public on the impacts of heat on human health and promotes community-level adaptation and preventive measures.

PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The objective of this consultancy is to support IMC’s public awareness efforts by delivering expert information to the Somali public on:

 
  • Health risks are associated with high temperatures and extreme heat.
  • Practical measures individuals and communities can take to protect themselves.
  • Ways to recognize and respond to symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

Scope of Work (SOW)

SCOPE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The consultant will:

  • Participating as a guest speaker in six lived radio sessions
  • Deliver clear, accessible health education messages on heat-related illnesses and prevention.
  • Address listener questions during live radio call-in segments.
  • Prepare a short summary of each session’s main talking points (in Somali).
  • Collaborate with the IMC communications team to align messaging with project goals and approved IEC materials.

DELIVERABLES DESCRIPTION:

  • 6 live radio sessions (one hour per live radio)
  • 6 session summary reports (one page each)
  • Participation in preparatory briefings and post-session reflections as required
  • submit of consultancy report

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ASSIGNMENT DELIVERABLES

  • This assignment will be delivered by the hired consultant through the local radios which IMC has contract with.  This assignment will start on 18th March and end 16th of April 2026.

Additional Technical or Language

Requirements

Qualifications: Advanced degrees in Public Health, Environmental Health, or related discipline.

 Experience: Demonstrated expertise in climate and health education, with a focus on heat impacts. Competency: Excellent Communication skills in Somali and English Languages: English & Somali
