JOB DESCRIPTION – COMMUNICATION OFFICER 

Job Grade 4

Department Communications Department

Duty Station Garowe

Coverage Puntland State

Reports To Communication Manager 

Overall Job Purpose

Support the design, development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive communications strategy across all channels, such as broadcast, print, online, website and social media platforms and  produce multimedia content in various formats, including, videos and photo exhibits aimed at raising the visibility of SRCS programme activities and build a positive image in order to create good-will and credibility. 

Other responsibilities include monitoring the implementation of humanitarian services to identify, capture and document success stories, assisting with the production of press releases, supporting media coverage and liaising with stakeholders to identify beneficiary impact stories for dissemination and media scanning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Programme Planning and Implementation

  • Participate and contribute to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the communication plan to support strategic priorities and change interventions
  • Disseminate knowledge of international humanitarian law, norms and the Fundamental Principles of the Movement among the population, partners, humanitarian actors and all levels of authorities.
  • Contribute to the design and update publicity materials to engage with relevant partners and stakeholders
  • Coordinate media relations, support in drafting press releases, facilitate press interviews, monitor media coverage, promptly respond to media inquiries and requests in consultation with the immediate line manager to promote coverage of SRCS programme activities
  • Document human interest and news stories of SRCS programme activities, initiatives and expertise can be illustrated and promoted
  • Monitor programme implementation to identify, capture and document, innovative approaches and best practices for the purposes of disseminating and sharing experiences
  • Support the planning and organization of conferences, events, exhibitions and all humanitarian emergency campaigns to inform stakeholders and enhance SRCS image and reputation
  • Manage and update relevant mailing lists and contact information, including the media

Operations Management

  • Support event planning, preparation and implementation in collaboration with programme counterparts
  • Support development and implementation of capacity building programmes aimed at equipping and strengthening staff and volunteers to contribute effectively to the promotion of SRCS reputation

External Relationships

  • Represent SRCS at various fora and attend relevant meetings and events to promote communication programme activities
  • Build and foster alliances and networks that enhance knowledge generation and sharing, learning and collaboration among relevant organisations and individuals
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the SRCS Senior Management

Experiences and Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional practice in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Social Sciences

Professional Training

Photography, Videography, Social Media, Media Monitoring, Web Design

Language Requirement

Demonstrate proficiency in Somali and English languages

Relevant Experience

Minimum 5 years relevant experience demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective communications programs as well as coming up with creative narratives, script writing and using storyboards to produce videos and related publications
