Job Description

Position title       :            Nutrition Educator (14)

Reporting to       :            Nutrition Supervisor

Location               :            Baidoa,Burhakaba,Berdale and Qasaxdere

                                     

Job summary:

Under the supervision of the Nutrition Supervisor, the Nutrition Educator will be primarily responsible for carrying out mobilization activities in allocated program areas in line with agreed plans, protocols and current donor proposals and ensure smooth, effective operation of the mobilizations exercises in SOS MC operational areas.

The incumbent will ensure that CNWs convey correct health and nutrition messages to the community and that the community accurately and correctly interpret those messages into actions. S/he will work with a multi-sectoral team of heads of facilities and other staff.

Responsibilities:

Supervision and capacity building of staff

  • Supervise and manage a team of Community Workers as per the agreed organogram.
  • Provide supportive supervision and technical support to the CNWs and recommend the need for refresher trainings to the Nutrition Supervisor as necessary. 
  • Participate in recruitment of new Community Workers as/if necessary.
  • Identify training opportunities for the CNWs and recommend it to the Nutrition Supervisor and participate in delivering such trainings if appropriate

 

 Programme implementation and Development

  • Carry out mobilization activities in allocated program areas in line with agreed plans, protocols and current donor proposals.
  • Ensure smooth, effective operation of the mobilizations exercises in SOS MC operational areas
  • In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area coordinate the activities of outreach volunteers and ensure active participation of outreach volunteers in OTP/ SFP distributions
  • In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area ensure that a fully-operational system is in place for the follow-up of children not returning to the programme (including absentees, defaulters, deaths) and children “at risk” (long stay/not gaining weight / social or physically disabling problems) and that post-visit feedback is given to the SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area.
  • In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition for the area guarantee that, whenever possible, all team members deliver nutrition education of appropriate content and manner to mothers and other carers
  • In liaison with the SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area converse with mothers at sites and regularly conduct surveys evaluating the mothers’ understanding of the messages and the programme in general
  • Maintain close relations with the Nutrition Supervisor and  Nurses, to ensure that beneficiaries referred from the community are admitted to the program and that beneficiaries requiring proper follow up at home are followed up by the assigned CNWs
  •  Ensure that CNWs convey correct health and nutrition messages to the community and that the community accurately and correctly interpret those messages into actions
  • Check that CNWs accurately fill mobilization and referral slips and keep records of tally sheets
  • Ensure that our program is accountable to the communities it serves, making sure that CNWs and community members know how they can provide feedback to SOS MC; that any feedback received is treated confidentially and acted upon in consultation with the Nutritionist/ the Project Coordinator; and that feedback to complainants is provided in a timely manner.

 

 Monitoring and Reporting

  • Collect and compile weekly and monthly mobilization reports and submit them to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Undertake additional assessments, beneficiary interviews etc. as necessary, to keep up to date with community perceptions of the project, changing needs and opinions.
  • Participate in health and nutrition assessments, surveys, surveillance, program reviews and other monitoring activities as required.
  • Contribute to the preparation and collection of case studies to demonstrate programme impact
  • In liaison with the OTP/SFP nurse / nutrition assistants for the area devise performance indicators to monitor effectiveness and impact of community mobilisation; set objectives/indictors and record progress against these
  • Explore all links with individual members of the community (eg. village chiefs, traditional midwives, local health workers) and develop their engagement and ownership of the community-based activities
  • Provide regular feedback to communities

 

  • Undertake regular visits to the project sites and report back with findings/recommendations

Experiences and Qualifications

Job competencies:

Essential         

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nurse, PH or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive professional experience in Managements of Immunization, or had work with Health Partner for MCH Projects
  • Excellent command in Somali and English
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ward Management Skills
  • Basic Knowledge and experience Nutrition
  • Proactive, result oriented, independent, able to identify and carry out duties with minimum supervision
