Background

The University of Hargeisa started operation in the year 2000, It is the largest and leading chartered public university in the Republic of Somaliland. The College of Medicine & Health Sciences of the University of Hargeisa is a pioneering healthcare institution and the principal leader in training healthcare professionals for Somaliland. The college was established in 2003/2004 as the faculty of medicine with an intake of 75 undergraduate students. It was a challenging task since we had started the program in a post conflict environment with a very limited resource. It has also been transformed from being a faculty offered an undergraduate medical program to a college of Medicine & health sciences.

Role Purpose

Duties and responsibilities

The Lecturer shall have the following powers and responsibilities:

Clinical Supervision:

    1. Supervise emergency medicine residents during their clinical rotations in the emergency department.
    2. Ensure residents receive comprehensive training in assessing, diagnosing, and managing a wide range of emergency conditions.
    3. Oversee residents' performance during procedures and patient interactions to ensure high standards of care and patient safety.

Educational Leadership:

    1. Develop and conduct educational sessions, workshops, and seminars focused on emergency medicine.
    2. Guide residents in the preparation and presentation of case studies, journal clubs, and research projects.
    3. Ensure the residency curriculum remains current with the latest advancements in emergency medicine.

Mentorship and Professional Development:

    1. Provide mentorship and career guidance to residents, helping them develop their clinical and professional skills.
    2. Foster a supportive learning environment that encourages continuous improvement and lifelong learning.

Performance Evaluation:

    1. Conduct regular assessments of residents' clinical performance, including skills, knowledge, and professional behavior.
    2. Provide constructive feedback and develop individualized improvement plans as necessary.
    3. Complete and submit formal evaluation reports to the Academic Committee of Residence.

Program Development and Quality Assurance:

    1. Collaborate with the Academic Committee of Residence to develop, implement, and refine the emergency medicine residency curriculum.
    2. Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the clinical training and educational experiences of residents.
    3. Ensure the residency program meets the accreditation standards set by the National Health Professions Council (NHPC) and other relevant accrediting bodies.

Administrative Duties:

    1. Maintain accurate records of residents' progress, performance evaluations, and other relevant documentation.
    2. Participate in meetings with the Academic Committee of Residence, faculty, and hospital administration.
    3. Assist in the recruitment and selection process of new residents.

Experiences and Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Board certification in Emergency Medicine.
  • Additional certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) are highly desirable.
  • Licensure:
  • Valid medical license to practice in Somaliland.

Experience:

Clinical Experience:

  • Extensive clinical experience in emergency medicine, typically a minimum of 5-10 years post-residency.
  • Experience working in high-volume emergency departments is advantageous.

Teaching and Supervisory Experience:

  • Previous experience in a teaching or supervisory role within an emergency medicine department.
  • Experience in mentoring and training medical students, residents, and other healthcare professionals.

Skills and Competencies:

Clinical Skills:

  • Proficiency in emergency medical procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to handle a wide range of medical emergencies effectively.

Leadership and Management:

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to provide clear and constructive feedback to trainees and staff.

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, patients, and their families.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make quick and effective decisions in high-pressure situations.

  • Dedication to continuous learning and staying updated with the latest advancements in emergency medicine.
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and developing educational programs for trainees.

Additional Considerations:

  • Research Involvement: Involvement in clinical research and a track record of publications in reputable medical journals can be an added advantage.
  • Professional Memberships: Membership in professional organizations such as emergency medicine association or equivalent.
  • Cultural Competence: Sensitivity to and understanding of cultural differences, especially if working in a diverse community or international setting.
